by David Fleschen
ArcelorMittal Germany has announced the appointment of Thomas Bünger as its new Chief Executive Officer. Bünger has been serving as CEO of the company's flat steel plants in Bremen and Eisenhüttenstadt since February 2024. His new role includes leading the management board of ArcelorMittal Germany Holding. Bünger succeeds Reiner Blaschek, who transitioned to the role of CEO at ArcelorMittal Europe – Flat Products last year.
Addressing his new position, Bünger commented on the current challenges faced by the industry and society. He emphasized the importance of addressing key industrial issues alongside the teams at Germany's four major production sites. Bünger highlighted the critical need for competitive energy prices, trade protection measures, and a carbon border adjustment to ensure fair and comparable market conditions. He expressed expectations for swift action from the incoming federal government to secure a sustainable future for steel production in Germany.
Prior to joining ArcelorMittal, Bünger served as CEO of London-based tin mining development company First Tin until 2024. He also held several senior positions at Aurubis in Hamburg, including serving on the executive board with responsibility for operations and technology.
