Tata Steel Nederland has signed a memorandum of understanding with Swedish company Lindab for the future supply of Zeremis® green steel. This agreement will take effect once Tata Steel's plant in IJmuiden, Netherlands, transitions to hydrogen-based steel production.
Lindab, known for developing and manufacturing sustainable ventilation systems, has a significant environmental footprint linked to its use of steel. Approximately 80 to 95 percent of the environmental impact of its products, and about 50 percent of the company’s total emissions, are related to steel. Despite this, steel remains crucial for producing ventilation systems due to its durability, recyclability, and non-flammability.
“Lindab is committed to contributing to a better global climate. To succeed in this mission, it is essential for us to collaborate with the right partners to minimize the environmental impact across our supply chain. Tata Steel is one such partner, and this agreement formalizes our collaboration,” said Matilda Isaksson, Group Sustainability Manager at Lindab.
Stefan Landesz, Director of the Commercial Business Unit Colors at Tata Steel Nederland, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership: “We are pleased with this memorandum of understanding and look forward to continuing our sustainable co-innovation with Lindab. Our long-standing relationship with Lindab aligns with their decision to purchase high-quality green steel from Tata Steel, which will be produced even more cleanly and sustainably in the future.”
The shift to green, recycled steel marks a major transformation for Tata Steel Nederland, aimed at substantially reducing CO2 emissions. The company’s green steel production will use Direct Reduction Iron (DRI) technology, initially powered by natural gas and later transitioning to hydrogen as it becomes more accessible and cost-effective. This new approach requires substantial investment and a shift in the production process. Tata Steel expects to achieve a 30 to 40 percent reduction in CO2 emissions by 2030, with the ultimate goal of producing fully carbon-neutral steel by 2045.
