Hydnum Steel: Agreement with Knauf Interfer to promote green steel

by David Fleschen

In response to the increasing demand for sustainable industrial solutions, Hydnum Steel, the first green steel plant on the Iberian Peninsula, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Knauf Interfer, a leading European steel processing and distribution company. This partnership aims to enhance the supply of emission-free green steel across Europe. Both companies will work together to create a more efficient and environmentally friendly value chain, emphasizing their commitment to sustainability within the steel industry.

As part of the agreement, Knauf Interfer will purchase green steel from Hydnum Steel, with an estimated annual value of 80 million euros. Additionally, the companies will establish a green steel supply network utilizing Knauf Interfer’s production and supply chain management platform. This platform will be centered around a trimodal hub in Duisburg, Germany, a strategically located inner port that will serve customers in Central European markets. The hub will optimize logistics to ensure efficient and sustainable deliveries.

The collaboration may also extend to steel product processing, with Knauf Interfer providing services such as cutting, segmentation, and re-coiling to meet the needs of Hydnum Steel’s customers. To ensure transparency, Knauf Interfer will offer an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD)-based approach to communicate the CO2 footprint of the steel to customers.

In line with their sustainability goals, the two companies also plan to implement a circular economy system for recycling ferrous scrap. This initiative will enable scrap generated within Knauf Interfer’s network to be recycled at Hydnum Steel’s Puertollano plant, helping to close the production loop and support a fully circular economy.
