European Commission confirms CBAM to begin on 1 January 2026
by David Fleschen

Brussels has confirmed that the fiscal phase of the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) will proceed as planned from 1 January 2026. In response to recent speculation about a possible delay, the European Commission has reaffirmed the existing legislative timeline.
EUROMETAL had formally sought clarification following widespread market rumours and media reports. In a written response, the Director-General of DG TAXUD emphasised that the current implementation date is embedded in EU law and cannot be changed without a formal legislative proposal and approval by both the European Parliament and the Council. No such proposal is currently under discussion.
The Commission added that it does not comment on unofficial market rumours. EUROMETAL announced it will continue to monitor the rollout of CBAM and inform its members as further official information becomes available.
