CBAM: Efficient Software Solution for Reporting Obligations and CO2 Emissions Calculation

by Dagmar Dieterle

A Conversation with Max Jung, Founder and CEO of CBAM-Estimator GmbH

The introduction of the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) presents significant challenges for many companies, particularly regarding the reporting and the calculation of CO2 emissions in non-EU countries.

CBAM-Estimator offers a comprehensive software solution that covers all CBAM requirements, from quarterly reporting to emissions calculation and certificate trading starting in 2026.

We spoke with Max Jung about the specific challenges companies face with CBAM and how his software simplifies this process.

marketSTEEL: What exactly can we expect from your CBAM solution?
We offer an all-in-one solution for companies affected by the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM). Our software covers all key areas: quarterly reporting, the emissions calculation required in non-EU countries starting in Q3 2024 and certificate trading from 2026.

Our goal is to make the entire CBAM process as simple and efficient as possible for companies, allowing them to focus on their core business. With our solution, we handle all aspects, ensuring companies are fully compliant and can easily meet the EU’s regulatory requirements.

marketSTEEL: How does the CBAM-reporting work with your software?
We have simplified the process significantly. Our customers receive a user-friendly data template that can be filled out in just a few minutes. Once completed, our software automatically generates a CBAM-compliant XML file, which can be directly uploaded to the EU portal. This saves companies a lot of time and reduces the risk of errors that can occur with manual report creation.

marketSTEEL: One of the biggest challenges is the emissions calculation abroad. How do you solve this problem?
The EU has developed a very complex Excel template (EU-Communication Templates) for six different product groups, each requiring different product-specific calculation methods. In some cases, emissions even need to be calculated manually, which complicates the process significantly.

To address these challenges, we have developed a software solution that automatically calculates CBAM-specific emissions and collects the necessary data in the native language of the foreign manufacturer.

Additionally, we handle all communication with foreign manufacturers. This ensures that emissions data are accurately collected and reported in line with EU requirements. This reduces misunderstandings, especially with foreign partners who often don't know how to correctly calculate their emissions.

Companies no longer need to deal with the complex EU templates or the communication with manufacturers – our solution takes care of everything, ensuring full compliance with the regulations.

marketSTEEL: Can you make a special offer to our readers?

Yes, gladly! We offer interested companies the opportunity to create their first CBAM report free of charge and without obligation using our software, allowing them to experience our service firsthand. Alternatively, we offer to carry out the mandatory emissions calculation for a foreign manufacturer free of charge. This way, companies can try our service without any immediate commitment. Renowned companies such as LG Electronics and Wacker Neuson, as well as numerous mid-sized companies in the German-speaking region, are already convinced of our service.
