Worldsteel: Global crude steel production declines by 4.7% in September 2024

According to the World Steel Association (worldsteel), crude steel production across 71 reporting countries totaled 143.6 million tonnes (Mt) in September 2024, marking a 4.7% decrease compared to September 2023.
Regional Production Overview
In September 2024, regional production trends varied:
- Africa produced 1.9 Mt, reflecting a 2.6% increase from September 2023.
- Asia and Oceania reported 105.3 Mt, a decline of 5.0%.
- European Union (EU 27) produced 10.5 Mt, a slight increase of 0.3%.
- Other European Countries contributed 3.6 Mt, an increase of 4.1%.
- Middle East recorded 3.5 Mt, down significantly by 23.0%.
- North America produced 8.6 Mt, down by 3.4%.
- Russia and other CIS, including Ukraine reported 6.8 Mt, a decrease of 7.6%.
- South America produced 3.5 Mt, increasing by 3.3%.
Top Steel-Producing Nations
The top 10 steel-producing nations exhibited mixed performance:
- China, the leading producer, recorded 77.1 Mt, a decrease of 6.1%.
- India followed with 11.7 Mt, a marginal drop of 0.2%.
- Japan produced 6.6 Mt, down 5.8%.
- United States output was 6.7 Mt, an increase of 1.2%.
- Russia (estimated) produced 5.6 Mt, a drop of 10.3%.
- South Korea produced 5.5 Mt, up by 1.3%.
- Germany reported 3.0 Mt, a 4.3% increase.
- Türkiye produced 3.1 Mt, marking a 6.5% rise.
- Brazil saw a significant 9.9% increase, producing 2.8 Mt.
- Iran (estimated) produced 1.5 Mt, down by 41.2%.
Year-to-Date Performance
From January to September 2024, global crude steel production totaled 1,394.1 Mt, representing a 1.9% decrease compared to the same period in 2023. This figure encompasses approximately 98% of the world’s total crude steel output in 2023.
