CO2 Calculator from Wuppermann determines savings in strip galvanizing
The Leverkusen-based steel processor Wuppermann uses an innovative strip galvanizing process at its sites in the Netherlands and Austria that cuts CO2 emissions by up to 43 percent. A CO2 calculator on the company's website now determines how much CO2 per ton of hot-dip galvanized strip steel customers can actually save individually.
The production of hot-dip galvanized steel strip using Wuppermann's Heat-to-Coat process causes significantly lower CO2 emissions than conventional cold strip galvanizing processes. This is the result of a study by the Fraunhofer Institute for Environmental, Safety and Energy Technology (UMSICHT), which Wuppermann commissioned in the summer of 2020.
The CO2 savings amount to 57 grams per kilogram of hot-dip galvanized steel strip at the Moerdijk site in the Netherlands and as much as 78 grams at the Judenburg site in Austria. This represents an advantage of 31 percent and 43 percent respectively over the standard galvanizing process used on the market.
With the new CO2 calculator from Wuppermann, customers and interested parties can now determine individually how much CO2 they are saving per ton of hot-dip galvanized steel and what CO2 equivalents this corresponds to -for example, how many trees would have to be planted to compensate for the corresponding amounts of CO2.
"We are proud of the good ecological balance of our strip galvanizing," says Johannes Nonn, Spokesman of the board of management at Wuppermann AG. "By illustrating the concrete savings, the CO2 calculator on our website can be used as a basis for decisions on sustainable steel purchasing".
