Vianode receives NOK 400 million loan from Innovation Norway

Vianode, a Norwegian advanced battery materials company, has secured a NOK 400 million loan commitment from Innovation Norway to support its research and development activities and expand its capacity to serve international electric vehicle (EV) and battery markets.

The funding will contribute to the development of Vianode’s first full-scale production facility, Via ONE, at Herøya Industrial Park, as well as its Technology Center in Kristiansand and its Oslo headquarters. The loan is part of Innovation Norway’s Green Industrial Financing program and is offered on market terms. It does not qualify as state aid under the regulations of the EFTA Surveillance Authority (ESA).

The financing is also backed by additional investment from Altor, one of Vianode’s owners.

“This loan strengthens our platform as we move forward with long-term funding to support our multi-phase investment plan,” said Vianode CEO Burkhard Straube. “With around 200 employees across three sites in Norway, we are building the competence and capacity needed to supply materials for up to 3 million electric vehicles annually by 2030.”

Innovation Norway is the Norwegian government’s primary agency for business development and innovation. The organization has previously supported Vianode as part of a national strategy to grow the battery value chain in Norway.

“Vianode represents the kind of technology-driven company that can meet global demand with significantly reduced emissions,” said Leon Bakkebø, Director of Banking and Finance at Innovation Norway. “The loan will help strengthen its R&D environment in Norway and support scaling for global growth.”

Vianode produces synthetic anode graphite, a core material in lithium-ion batteries, using high-temperature manufacturing processes. The company reports that its material reduces CO₂ emissions by up to 90% compared to conventional methods. It also aims to further reduce the carbon footprint of its products by nearly 50% by 2030.

The announcement follows Vianode’s recent entry into a long-term supply agreement with General Motors (NYSE: GM), covering the delivery of EV battery-grade anode graphite through 2033.

Anode graphite, the largest component by weight in a lithium-ion battery, is essential across all major battery technologies. Vianode’s efforts are aimed at creating a sustainable, high-performance supply chain rooted in European production and innovation.
