Two Nucor Mills Receive Upgrades From SMS group

In Alabama, Primetals Technologies will be upgrading Nucor's Tuscaloosa plate mill, it said. Meanwhile in Ohio, SMS group has received the final OK on a newly installed reheat furnace, it reported.
According to Primetals Technologies, the downcoiler will be capable of rolling up 1.25-inch-thick low-carbon-grade steels and 1-inch-thick line pipe grades. It will accept plate in widths of up to 102 inches.
In addition to the unit and automation upgrades, Primetals Technologies will supply new runout tables, a new coil handling area, an inspection line with shear, hydraulics, banders and markers. The project is to be completed by the first quarter of 2020.
According to SMS group, Nucor signed the certificate soon after commissioning as the furnace quickly hit its guaranteed performance targets. SMS said the furnace is the most energy-efficient furnace within Nucor’s fleet.
The company said the furnace is capable of heating 120 tons worth of hot billets to 2,255° F using less than 1.04 million British thermal units per ton.
“We are proud of the results achieved by this furnace. It represents the new industry benchmark in terms of reduced emissions in U.S. and in particular inside Nucor group,” said Simone Zussino, vice president for reheating furnaces and heat treatments at SMS group S.p.A.
