Swiss Steel Group receives EcoVadis Gold Medal for sustainability achievements
by David Fleschen

wiss Steel Group, a global supplier of special long steel, has been awarded the gold medal by EcoVadis, a leading platform for sustainability assessments in global supply chains. This marks an improvement from the previous year's silver medal and reflects the company’s commitment to environmentally friendly production, social responsibility, and ethical business practices.
With this recognition, Swiss Steel Group ranks among the top 5% of all companies assessed by EcoVadis worldwide and is positioned within the top 2% of the iron and steel industry. This achievement represents the highest rating the company has received in an internationally recognized sustainability assessment.
Commitment to Sustainability and Green Steel Production
As one of Europe's leading special steel manufacturers, Swiss Steel Group follows a comprehensive sustainability strategy. The company exclusively utilizes the electric arc furnace (EAF) process, which generates up to 81% lower carbon emissions compared to the traditional blast furnace method. By using recycled steel scrap and increasing reliance on renewable energy sources, Swiss Steel Group significantly reduces its environmental footprint.
Through the development and supply of Green Steel, the company provides a CO₂-reduced alternative for industries such as automotive, aviation, mechanical engineering, and energy. This contributes to lowering the overall carbon footprint across the entire value chain.
Frank Koch, CEO of Swiss Steel Group, emphasized the significance of the EcoVadis award:
"Receiving the gold medal is a testament to our ongoing sustainability efforts and a strong message to our customers and the broader steel industry. Our goal is to drive the transition toward a more sustainable future by implementing environmentally responsible production processes and innovative materials. This EcoVadis assessment reaffirms our strategy and motivates us to continue on this path."
As part of its sustainability strategy, the company has also decided to conduct future sustainability assessments at the Group level, rather than evaluating individual sites separately. This approach aims to optimize and coordinate sustainability initiatives across all production facilities.
EcoVadis: A Benchmark for Sustainable Business Practices
EcoVadis is a globally recognized platform for evaluating the environmental, social, and ethical performance of companies. More than 125,000 businesses across 200 industries and 180 countries participate in its standardized assessment process.
The evaluation is based on four key criteria:
-
Environmental management – Efforts to reduce emissions, energy consumption, and resource use.
-
Labor and human rights – Employee rights, diversity and inclusion, and workplace safety.
-
Ethical business practices – Anti-corruption measures, fair business conduct, and data protection.
-
Sustainable procurement – Consideration of social and environmental factors in the supply chain.
The assessment follows international standards such as the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), the UN Global Compact, and ISO 26000. Companies undergo detailed data analysis and external audits before being categorized into four levels: bronze, silver, gold, and platinum.
The gold medal confirms Swiss Steel Group’s effective implementation of sustainability measures and its leadership in advancing sustainability within the steel industry.
Looking Ahead: Sustainability as a Competitive Advantage
Swiss Steel Group aims to further enhance its sustainability efforts and expand its Green Steel initiatives. This includes reducing CO₂ emissions, adopting circular economy principles, and implementing innovative technologies to advance environmentally friendly steel production.
