JSW Steel Dolvi Works partners with SMS Group for major facility expansion

by David Fleschen

JSW Steel Dolvi Works has selected SMS Group for a significant expansion of its steelmaking facility, aiming to increase the plant’s annual production capacity by 3.7 million tons per year. The project involves the installation of a 350-ton basic oxygen furnace (BOF) converter, one of the largest in India, along with a twin ladle furnace and a primary gas cleaning plant.

A key feature of the expansion is the advanced oxygen lance system, which has a maximum blowing capacity of 1,250 Nm³/min, enhancing production efficiency. The new facility will also incorporate a comprehensive automation system, enabling seamless monitoring and control of production without switching between different automation levels. Additionally, SMS Group will provide process optimization models integrating process control, production strategies, and metallurgical models to ensure consistent product quality and reliability.

This agreement underscores the long-standing collaboration between JSW Steel and SMS Group, reaffirming SMS’s role as a leading technology provider in the steel industry. In addition to the steelmaking expansion, SMS Group has secured other orders from JSW Steel in 2024, including a new 4.5-mtpa blast furnace and the CSP® Nexus, an integrated casting and rolling mill capable of producing hot strip and plate up to 2,600 millimeters wide within a single plant.
