Steel production in Germany remains weak in first three quarters of 2024

by David Fleschen

Steel companies in Germany produced approximately 3 million tonnes of crude steel in September, representing a 4.3% increase compared to the same month last year. However, due to historically low production levels in 2023, the overall output for the first three quarters of 2024 remains subdued, with total production at around 28.4 million tonnes, a modest 4% increase year-on-year.

The production of oxygen steel, which accounted for nearly 2 million tonnes in September, saw a 4% decline compared to the same month in 2023. Year-to-date figures show a slight increase of 1.5% for oxygen steel, reaching almost 20 million tonnes.

In contrast, electric steel production surged by 25.9% in September, with a total output of 996,000 tonnes. Over the first nine months of the year, electric steel production increased by 10.4%, totaling 8.4 million tonnes.

Pig iron production continued its downward trend, with a 5% drop in September compared to the previous year, resulting in 1.8 million tonnes. Year-to-date, pig iron production showed a slight growth of 1.6%, with a total of 18.4 million tonnes.

Warm-rolled steel products, a key indicator of steel demand, increased by 7.9% in September, bringing the total for the year to 24.3 million tonnes, a 3.2% rise compared to the same period in 2023.
