Steel industry to remain competitive
by Hans Diederichs
Federal Minister of Economics Peter Altmaier is working on a concept to revive the German economy after the acute crisis. This concept is not limited to economic stimulus programs but is intended to improve the competitiveness of the domestic economy, for example through progress in digitization. The aim must be to maintain Europe as a location for a competitive steel industry, for example. The most climate-friendly steel must continue to be produced in Europe, Altmaier said. Therefore, Altmaier demanded that EU climate policy should place even greater emphasis on sustainable industrial policy. The industrial location must become more resistant in the long term against crises such as Corona, but also against protectionist or state-interventionist policies from other countries.
