In a move set to significantly boost Angola’s industrial sector, Sonangol and the Tosyali Group have entered into a strategic agreement to advance the Kassinga iron and steel project. The partnership was formalized on Monday during the visit of Angola’s Minister of Mineral Resources, Oil, and Gas to Turkey.
The agreement integrates Angola’s national oil company, Sonangol, into the newly restructured Tosyali Iron & Steel Angola SA. This collaboration aims to inject new energy into the Kassinga project, which is considered a cornerstone of Angola’s economic diversification strategy.
Fuat Tosyali, President of the Turkish holding company, welcomed Sonangol’s involvement, stating, “The inclusion of Sonangol in our corporate structure is a clear indication of Angola’s commitment to this project. It will undoubtedly provide the Kassinga iron and steel project with renewed momentum.”
Strategic Importance of the Kassinga Project
Slated to begin production by mid-2027, the Tosyali Angola project is poised to become a critical driver of Angola’s economy. The initiative is expected to meet the growing domestic demand for steel, while also enhancing export capabilities. This dual focus is anticipated to increase national revenue and create significant employment opportunities.
The Kassinga project will commence with the reactivation of the Jamba Mineira in Huíla, followed by the construction of a steel plant at the Sacomar Mineral Terminal in Moçâmedes, Namibe province. This facility will convert extracted iron into steel, a key material for industries such as energy, construction, manufacturing, and transportation.
Minister Diamantino Azevedo’s visit to Turkey concluded with a tour of the Tosyali Group’s state-of-the-art steel complex in Hatay. The facility, equipped with advanced automation technology and featuring a port for exporting finished products, underscores the scale and sophistication of the Tosyali Group’s operations.
The visit also highlighted the strong bilateral relations between Angola and Turkey, with the Angolan delegation including Sonangol CEO Gaspar Martins and Angola’s Ambassador to Turkey, José Patrício.
This collaboration between Sonangol and the Tosyali Group marks a significant step forward in realizing Angola’s industrial ambitions, setting the stage for sustainable economic growth and development in the years to come.
