SMS Group enhances durability and monitoring of blast furnace 4 at ROGESA
by David Fleschen
ROGESA Roheisengesellschaft Saar GmbH in Dillingen, Germany, has partnered with SMS group to modernize blast furnace 4 (BF4), aiming to extend its service life and improve monitoring of the hearth lining. The modernization project will involve a 55-day shutdown following nine years of continuous operation. The upgrade focuses on renewing the furnace lining for more durable and reliable performance.
The project includes the design and delivery of Paul Wurth hearth lining technology and multi thermocouple sensor probes (MTPs), with SMS group providing technical support throughout the installation. Measurements taken in 2023 revealed that the wear on BF4's hearth had progressed more rapidly than anticipated, nearing its wear limit.
Originally constructed in the late 1970s, BF4 was enlarged and relined by Paul Wurth in 2003 and last underwent relining in 2016. The furnace has a working volume of 2,460 cubic meters and produces 6,400 tons of pig iron per day.
The new lining will utilize Paul Wurth's advanced technology, including carbon blocks, ceramic cups, and refractory materials, chosen for their durability and reliability. This design provides exceptional thermal insulation to maintain high operational temperatures, corrosion resistance to prevent chemical damage from molten iron and slag, and structural integrity to withstand mechanical stress.
The multi thermocouple sensor probes will enable precise monitoring of hearth lining wear, supporting improved operational efficiency and proactive maintenance.
Project completion is scheduled for the third quarter of 2025, with the planned shutdown lasting only 55 days.
Highlighting the ongoing collaboration, Martina Engelmann, project manager at SMS group in Germany, stated, “We are delighted to continue our partnership with ROGESA on this important project. Our advanced hearth lining technology enables ROGESA to extend the life of their furnace, operate them more safely, and prevent forced shutdowns. After the big reline in 2003, it makes us proud to continue collaborating here in Dillingen.”
Dr. Jürgen Hochhaus, operations manager of the blast furnace department at ROGESA, added, “We greatly appreciate SMS group in Germany for their flexibility and prompt responsiveness to our requests, which were critical to the success of this project. Their expert solutions, particularly their expertise in hearth lining and multi thermocouple sensor probes, ensure the durability and safety of our operations.”
This modernization project reinforces the long-standing partnership between SMS group and ROGESA, building on previous successful collaborations in hot blast stove and refractory projects.
