RWI / ISL Container Throughput Index: Trade Conflicts Affect World Trade
Press release from 20 December 2019

The container handling index of the RWI and the Institute for Shipping Economics and Logistics (ISL) fell significantly to 137.7 in November according to the current flash estimate.

The main results:

• The container handling index of the RWI - Leibniz Institute for Economic Research and the Institute for Shipping Economics and Logistics (ISL) fell significantly by one point to 137.7 in November.

• At the same time, the value for October was revised downwards by 1.2 points compared to the flash estimate. This vigorous downward revision was not unexpected, as the past flash estimate was based on a smaller number of ports than usual.

• The trade conflicts now leave clear traces in world trade.

• The sharp decline in ports on the west coast of the USA is striking.

• However, the flash estimate for November is based on the data for 38 ports, which account for a good 60 percent of the handling volume shown in the index.

• The RWI / ISL container handling index for December 2019 will be published on January 31, 2020.

Regarding the development of the index, RWI business manager Roland Döhrn says: "After the index has been surprisingly robust in recent months, the trade conflicts now seem to be having an impact on world trade."
