Potential setback for Germany’s flagship industrial project "Green Steel"
by David Fleschen
Thyssenkrupp, still a key player in Germany’s industrial landscape, is reevaluating its transition to producing "green steel" using hydrogen, a move that could put one of the country’s most ambitious industrial initiatives at risk. Despite substantial funding commitments from both the federal and state governments, the company has identified significant technical and economic challenges that threaten the project's progress.
According to a report by Handelsblatt, the entire initiative is now in jeopardy. A major concern is the potential use of natural gas instead of hydrogen during the initial phase of the transition, which would severely limit the expected reductions in CO2 emissions. This development could not only undermine the project's competitiveness but also lead to higher costs for taxpayers.
