Outokumpu has released new Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) to aid customers in reducing supply chain carbon emissions. These declarations offer verified data on the environmental impact of Outokumpu’s stainless steel products, which boast a carbon footprint up to 75% lower than the global industry average. In 2023, these products helped reduce emissions by 12 million tons globally compared to industry standards.
The EPDs are intended to enhance transparency within the stainless steel supply chain, benefiting industries such as construction, energy, and marine. Heidi Peltonen, Vice President for Sustainability at Outokumpu, noted, “These externally verified EPDs enable our customers to make informed choices that contribute to their carbon reduction efforts. We see this as a critical step in communicating the impact of our products transparently.”
The lifecycle analyses behind the EPDs evaluate stainless steel’s environmental impact from raw material extraction through manufacturing and recycling potential. Covering austenitic, ferritic, and duplex stainless steels in both cold and hot rolled forms, the data spans six separate documents.
With growing global demand for low-carbon materials, Outokumpu aims to address this need with extensive environmental data, including product-specific carbon footprint calculations. The company’s efforts align with the broader goal of reducing steel industry emissions by 90% by 2050, a response to the sector’s significant contribution to global greenhouse gas emissions.
