by David Fleschen
SSAB has announced the appointment of Johnny Sjöström as its new President and CEO, effective October 28, 2024. Sjöström, who currently leads the SSAB Special Steels division, will succeed Martin Lindqvist, who is stepping down to pursue a career on corporate boards.
Johnny Sjöström brings a wealth of industry experience and international expertise to his new role. Since 2019, he has been responsible for the SSAB Special Steels division, where he has played a key role in expanding the business and driving the green transformation of SSAB's steelworks in Oxelösund. Before joining SSAB, Sjöström served as CEO of Uddeholm and held various leadership positions at Outokumpu Stainless Oy.
"SSAB’s board and I are very pleased that Johnny Sjöström has accepted the role of President and CEO," said Lennart Evrell, Chairman of the Board at SSAB. "With his strong technical knowledge and extensive experience in the industry, both in the Nordic region and internationally, he is well-equipped to lead SSAB into the future. I also want to express our gratitude to Martin Lindqvist for his significant contributions to SSAB and for shaping it into the strong company it is today."
In his first statement following the announcement, Sjöström expressed his commitment to the company’s future: "I am honored and proud that the board has entrusted me with leading SSAB into its next phase. As I prepare to take on this new role, I plan to spend time getting to know all parts of the organization. Over the past years, I have worked closely with Martin Lindqvist, and I look forward to continuing our efforts to deliver on SSAB’s long-term strategy alongside our talented employees."
Sjöström is also a Docent in Material Science at Karlstad University and an Executive MBA from the Stockholm School of Economics. He will continue to lead the SSAB Special Steels division until he formally takes over as CEO in late October 2024.
