Salzgitter AG expands product range with low CO2 steel grades
Salzgitter AG has successfully produced the first low-CO2 green steel slab (pre-product for rolling and further processing) at its Peine plant. The Group will thus be offering its customers green flat steel products in a differentiated range of dimensions and grades before the end of 2020. The carbon footprint of these products is 75% smaller than that of conventional production.
Following the conversion of a continuous caster, it is now possible to meet the lively interest in such materials. The slabs are then rolled into hot and cold strip at Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH. These environmentally friendly steel products can be used for all common applications, such as in vehicle construction, the building industry and industrial applications.
Prof. Dr.-Ing. Heinz Jörg Fuhrmann, Chairman of the Executive Board of Salzgitter AG, commented: "The Salzgitter Group is a pioneer of low CO2 steel production. We are once again demonstrating this with the production route for green flat steel via the Peine electric steel plant and rolling process in Salzgitter. For many of our customers, it is important to obtain a physically real product that is already CO2-reduced, and not just by means of more or less theoretical balance sheet considerations.
In addition, we are working intensively with partners to convert steel production to a low-CO2, hydrogen-based process through our innovation project "SALCOS - Salzgitter Low CO2Steelmaking", which will make it possible to reduce CO2 by up to 95 %".
