CO2 pricing must not additionally burden steel industry
by Hans Diederichs
Hans Jürgen Kerkhoff, President of the German Steel Industry Association, added: "The steel industry in Germany is committed to the Paris Climate Agreement. However, climate policy instruments in the transport and building sectors must not lead to additional burdens for steel companies, as these are already subject to CO2 pricing through EU emissions trading. An expansion of the European emissions trading system would result in significant increases in the CO2 price and thus a considerable additional burden on energy-intensive industries. We therefore reject this model. Only if the international competitiveness of European industry is secured will it be possible to invest in low CO2 production processes".
