Benteler to modernize seamless tube mill with SMS group technology
by David Fleschen

BENTELER Steel/Tube GmbH & Co KG is set to modernize its seamless tube mill in Paderborn-Schloss Neuhaus with the installation of SMS group’s advanced CARTA®neo SRM Technology System. The upgrade aims to enhance operational performance, safeguard system availability, and maintain high product quality.
The modernization will involve replacing the existing CARTA® automation system with SMS group’s next-generation CARTA®neo SRM, which features updated crop end control (CEC) and wall thickness control (WTC). These enhancements are designed to optimize yield, product consistency, and overall efficiency in the stretch-reducing mill (SRM) process.
The updated system includes a modern hardware and software architecture, offering increased flexibility and accessibility through browser-based operation on various client devices. The upgrade also addresses concerns related to the obsolescence of components and limited availability of spare parts in the current system.
Scheduled for completion by the third quarter of 2025, the scope of the project includes virtual server installation of the CARTA®neo SRM planning and process modules, built on SMS group’s X-Pact® system. The system will operate on open-source software and incorporate existing production data, ensuring continuity and future scalability.
BENTELER has also entered into a three-year service agreement with SMS group, which covers remote maintenance, troubleshooting, updates, and tailored system enhancements.
The project marks the latest chapter in a long-standing partnership between the two companies. SMS group first delivered the stretch-reducing mill and its initial automation system to BENTELER in 1985. The current modernization represents the fourth generation of the CARTA® system implemented at the site.
