ArcelorMittal has been recognized as a top honoree in the International Data Corporation (IDC) Future Enterprise North America Awards for its innovative project aimed at optimizing slab yard operations using Artificial Intelligence (AI). The project, titled Slab Yard Optimisation Brain, was developed through a collaboration between ArcelorMittal’s Global R&D team and personnel from its AM/NS Calvert joint venture in Calvert, Alabama.

The AI-driven model is designed to transform steel plant operations by utilizing machine learning to enhance the management of slab yard processes. By analyzing operational data and employing hybrid simulation models, the system adjusts strategies in real-time to streamline process flows and adapt to production demands, improving efficiency and decision-making.

“ArcelorMittal R&D has dedicated decades to integrating AI into operational processes to drive better business decisions,” said Marta Garcia Barzana, R&D AI Business Portfolio Director. “The Slab Yard Optimisation project exemplifies the results of close collaboration between our AI specialists and the Calvert team, ushering in a new era of AI-enabled productivity.”

The system allows AM/NS Calvert to manage an inventory of over 17,000 slabs across five bays while coordinating the operation of ten cranes. By integrating with existing tracking systems, the project has not only optimized material flow but has also generated millions of dollars in savings and supported record production levels.

“Historically, steel mills have concentrated on steel production over material flow optimization,” said Cai Unger, Director of Internal Logistics at AM/NS Calvert. “With AI, we’ve positioned ourselves at the forefront of logistics innovation, using this technology to enhance operational efficiency and sharpen our competitive edge.”

The Slab Yard Optimisation Brain project was recognized as the Overall Winner in the Operations category of the IDC Future Enterprise North America Awards. The awards highlight organizations that excel in digital business initiatives by leveraging advanced technologies and intelligent infrastructure.

“This acknowledgment in IDC’s fourth annual awards program demonstrates ArcelorMittal’s leadership in embracing digital transformation,” said Reid Paquin, Research Vice President, Future of Operations at IDC. “The slab yard optimization project is a standout example of how innovation can drive efficiency and set new industry benchmarks.”
