Andritz to provide combi-line furnace for Borçelik’s new cold strip mill

by David Fleschen

The international technology group ANDRITZ has been chosen by Turkish steel producer Borçelik to supply a combi-line furnace for a new continuous galvanizing and annealing line. This line, which will be part of Borçelik’s new cold strip mill complex in the Gemlik region of Bursa, is expected to begin operations in the third quarter of 2026. The financial terms of the contract have not been disclosed.

The combi-line furnace will play a crucial role in the production of automotive-grade material. It will provide hot-dip galvanized strip for exposed automotive panels and uncoated strip. The ANDRITZ supply package includes a radiant-tube furnace with dedicated annealing and soaking sections, a mixed soaking/slow cooling area, and the ANDRITZ Differential Rapid Jet Cooling system.

Designed for flexibility, the furnace can operate in either continuous galvanizing line (CGL) mode, where the strip is coated in a zinc pot and cooled afterward, or continuous annealing line (CAL) mode, where the strip bypasses the zinc pot and moves into the overaging section. The configuration also includes a full zinc pot bypass for CAL operations. Additionally, the furnace design allows for future expansion, enabling Borçelik to boost capacity or accommodate new steel grades as needed.

Borçelik, a joint venture between Borusan Holding and ArcelorMittal, is Turkey’s first private flat steel manufacturer and the country’s largest producer of galvanized flat steel. The company’s choice of ANDRITZ technology underscores the latter’s expertise and strong track record in automotive steel processing equipment.
