AMP delays temporary idling of its primary operations in Krakow
by Hans Diederichs
ArcelorMittal Poland (AMP) informs that the company is postponing the temporary idling of its primary operations in Krakow, a process originally planned for September 2019.
As the company representatives have stated before, the difficult decision on idling is a result of the challenges that the steel industry faces in Europe. “We are still confronted with high raw material prices, rising costs of CO 2 emission rights and weak safeguarding measures in Europe, which translate onto a huge increase in third country imports. All this in an environment of a global steelmaking overcapacity of over 400 m tonnes. Nevertheless, we have decided to postpone the idling of primary operations in Krakow, originally planned for September as we want to revaluate the whole situation. We would like to once again underline that the idling will be temporary and that none of our employees will lose their job during this standstill. We are committed to our presence in Poland and want to continue to produce steel here.”
Since privatization ArcelorMittal has invested over PLN 7 bn in its Polish assets, of which over 3 bn has been in Kraków.
